Social media and other digital platforms play an important role in introducing college students to new reading materials.
Among the 214 first-year Black women students surveyed, over 20 percent of students were led to reading something new from social media while another 14 percent indicated podcasts, videos, or various modes of media. These results highlight the different ways that students encounter books and other reading materials through digital platforms.
The findings suggest that digital media provide important opportunities for students to discover books and other reading materials beyond traditional classroom settings. Online recommendations, videos, and podcasts can introduce students to books they might not otherwise encounter while offering educators new ways to encourage reading.
The finding raises a larger question for us: Can social media be used as a tool to better inform students about books/encouragement to read?
