When we were sketching out the episodes that we wanted early on for our podcast Remarkable Receptions, we of course knew we wanted to add Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) to the mix. You want to talk about a novel turned movie turned Broadway play with a remarkable reception then Walker's novel is it.
Kathy Lou Schultz wrote the script for us. At one point, she writes that "A novel’s reception is measured not only by numbers of copies sold or the awards the author garners, but by the impact it has on readers. Sometimes a book is so remarkable that its effects are made evident through acts of personal and social transformation. The Color Purple is that kind of book."
