The article that meant the most to me was "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump". The reason I liked this article was that it reminded me of the importance of diversity and including people with differing opinions and experiences. It is easy for us to think that we are the most knowledgeable about things and know the way things should be done, but it is important to remember that the best ideas come from diverse perspectives.

Sophie Brickman’s “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” had the most impact in my opinion. While the discussion of public breastfeeding has been controversial for some time, no one seems to want to address the difficulty mothers face when it comes to finding the right materials and time to pump their breasts. Outsiders do not realize the limitations these mothers face, whether it is financial, due to the high cost of breast pumps, or occupational, like working in an office that offers no space for a woman to comfortably pump/breastfeed. I think this article did a great job of shining light on the issue. -Evan S.

The most important article I read was Sophie Brickman’s “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump”. I appreciated how Brickman emphasized the stigma that women are fighting against. Actions to help eliminate that stigma is what I found most helpful.

Ceridwen Dovey's "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos" was to the most profound article in my opinion. As Dovey was explaining the numerous amount of space pollution, I found myself concerned about the future effects this could have on our planet since many already believe that the planet is plagued by the oncoming on climate change. This story also opened my eyes to the new field that can interpret previous ways of life and events through the collection of "space junk."

Sophie Brickman’s “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” was the most important article to me. I think this because of the personal relation the article has to me. I breastfed so i personally experienced what the women in the article did and they chose to make a change to their situation while i did not. I just dealt with it. They took control of their situation and it is admirable.

“Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information” was the most useful to me. I partially disagreed with the point of that article, which is not something I can say about the majority of the articles we read. This is important to me because the article was thought-provoking enough for me to disagree and to form my own opinions and thoughts.

the article that was most important to me was Sophie Brickman's article. The article really stood out tome because it's an everyday occurrence, and to me as a woman, i'm probably going to go through the same struggles that these women had to endure. women get sexualized everyday, and breastfeeding is just one of the many ways that this sexualization is carried out. breastfeeding is an absolute necessity for life, so the fact that women can't go to work and be able to do something as simple as breastfeed so that their child is able to eat is really sad and it really points out w hat is wrong in our society today.

Susannah Felts Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information was most useful and interesting for me because it incorporated the complexities of of universe, the information age we live in, and the shortness of life. Today, millions of people have access to a wealth of knowledge at all times that was not possible before. We can learn about difficult subjects like our universe and space and have it explained to us easily. Lastly, I mentioned the shortness of our lifetime in my post about this article. We must live our lives and enjoy it as much as possible because life is not guaranteed and may end at any second.

The article, "Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information" by Susannah Felt, was the most important article to me. This article was important to me because it helped me realize that I need to take moments away from my phone and actually live in the moment and experience life. The world is filled with nature and beauty and we need to take it in and experience it, instead of just snapping a quick picture or video and moving on to the next thing.

The article by Ceridwen Dovey titled "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos." is the most important to me. I love learning all things about space and all things about the planet's atmosphere but it was especially rewarding to learn about the trash and pollution that is human caused and is released into outer space. It is important to educate people about this issue because it can effect our ozone layer, and these garbage items in our solar system orbit around the planet and can become very dangerous. It is important to educate people on preventative tactics to stop the issue before it becomes too bad to deal with.

“The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” was the article that resonated with me the most. The fact that women discrimination in the workforce and in the market still astonishes me. These women had to reinvent the breast pump so women don't have to feel ashamed for pumping milk in public, especially at work. Gender inequality is very present in today's time, and I applaud the women behind this breast pump for trying to help their community of women who face discrimination - Layden Dukes

The article that impacted me the most was Sophie Brickman's "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump". This article spoke on the lack of convenience there is in public places for a mother to breast pump. This was a topic I had never really thought about or spoke on before reading the article. To be honest I am having a hard time choosing between "Astonish Me:.., and Dr, Space Junk.." since i see them addressing similar problems being how we as a society in the age of the "internet". They both show our lost interest in the cosmic sciences either it be an eclipse or exploring space where there seems to be a loss of interest due to the easy accessibility of vast information from many databases that require the need for satellites and as time continues the number of satellites in our skies will grow leading to the existence of more space junk and soon enough the outer layer of our atmosphere will look as it does in Wall-E if we are not careful.

The reading that meant the most/ impacted me the most would be Sophie Brickman’s “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump.” This article meant the most to me because it brings up the issue of the necessities of life being too expensive to sustain. A breast pump is something every mother will need, and similarly, healthy foods are things that everyone needs to survive and they are both very expensive. There are cheaper alternatives to both but the cheaper breast pump is not as affective or may not be as easy to use as the expensive one as well as with the not-so-healthy foods that are much less expensive but can affect human health in a negative way. So the question still remains, Why are the necessities in life so expensive?"

However, the most insightful article for me was that by Ross Anderson, "Plesitocene Park", This made me realize how much of the world is changing and not for the better. To me, this one is tough. It is between "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump" and "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos". They both opened my mind and less me less myopic to things that seemed rather esoteric when talked about at time.

Just out of pure interest, I think "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos" was the most important to me. For some reason, prior to reading this article, I has never really thought about Space pollution. I think it is because when space is talked about there some sort of belief that some kind of alchemy is involved. Individuals, including myself, just think of it as a never ending void that is never impacted by things we do on this planet, when in fact it is the exact antithesis of that.

Reading that article has made me much more conscientious towards the impact I can have on the environment in general. It was a great article!

I think the article, "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump", was the most important because as a female we might need to use a breast pump. The article that meant the most to me was The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump. It inspired me and showed me that no matter what people may think, you are the person that knows best for you. In the article I learned that a man created the first breast pump. This was because women were not allowed to participate in anything pretty much. The women hated the pump and decided to create newer, better feeling pump. This article helped me understand that while people may have good intentions that do not always know what is best for you.

Honestly, I struggled with trying to figure out which article left the biggest impact on me and my perspective and understanding of things, but I realized my decision was really between Sophie Brickman’s, “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” article, and Susannah Felt’s “Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information” article. Both articles either taught me or reminded me about two different things that did broaden my perspective on things. Brickman’s article taught me that there are still many adjustments and accommodations that need to be made in order for mothers to be recognized and feel prioritized within the workplace. And Felts’ message was the most relevant and useful to me, it reminded me to make time for those you love and the moments that may provide you with a worthy experience. She heightened my understanding of why we need to set aside the extra things every now and then so that we don’t miss out on life-changing moments and time with those that hold a high importance to us. I think this was one of the most impactful takeaway messages from any of the articles we read because as a college student it’s very easy to get consumed and taken away by your goals and plans you have for yourself. But we need to continue to live and embrace moments as they come, rather than being so focused on anything but present moments.

Bria B said...

The most important article to me was , "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump" because I never really realized the significance and outside issues with breast pumping, with also other reasoning. I knew that when mothers would breast feed in public that there would be some issues from the public's opinion but I never knew the full explanation or reasoning. From the text, I came to the realization that women (mothers) prefer to breast feed due to cost and how easy it is to do so without difficulty and from the text I see why. I didn't know the cost of breast pumps was that much because my mom breast fed my little sister from the machine when we was in public but because of our financial situation at the time that she could afford it and our support system, I didn't think a breast pumping machine would cost that much! Personally I believe if the baby needs to eat then let him/her eat, especially if the mother can't afford to purchase that machine or just dont prefer to use it but if she's in public I think for the public's sake at least cover your boob with a blanket. That way both sides can be content with the situation, but if the public is complaining even when the mother does have coverage then it is wrong. If the baby needs to eat, then let the baby eat in peace.

The article I was most moved by was "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump". I found myself being able to relate to this piece due to it having some aspects of engineering in it which is my major. In the piece after the women created the new breast pump they had to present their product to wealthy white men in order to convince them to sponsor their efforts. I was able to connect this to this to what I was told about engineers and how as they move up in the company their work becomes more business related which is why some engineering majors also minor in some form of business. While I cant I don't know how it felt to create and have to present a newly innovated breast pump I could also relate to the women in this situation.
In the past I have done engineering programs where, like women, African Americans are very common in the engineering field. When being in situations like theses women it can be intimidating especially when your future rides on the approval of someone who is in a position of power and might make decisions based on things such as sex, race, and religion.

The passage that meant the most to me was "Of Mothers and Monkeys". It was a heartwarming story for sure but the principles of the story were more meaningful than the sad story aspect. It posed a psychological social question for me. Should we be using animals for research and when exactly did it become appropriate to do so? Where does the social hierarchy of intelligence begin and what necessarily were the dictations that allowed humans to deem it morally right to use animals for research? Why would we necessarily deem our own personal lives more important than other life forms when we are the most harmful species that ever inhabited the earth. With our own technological advances we have harmed the Earth more than ever thought possible but other species have not. I think this aspect of the story was why it was so interesting because it is something think about quite often. Why should other animals suffer at the expense of research when the most harmful species to ever inhabit the Earth has only done good for themselves and has mainly harmed other species even to the point of extinction? And why is it that we put ourselves above all other species when we are the most destructive to our own environment?

In my opinion, The Squeeze was very informative for me over a plethora of ideas. Not only did it include very insightful dialogue about Silicon Valley, but it also had very thought-provoking comments on what mothers have to endure while breastfeeding their children. Me being a male, I have to admit that I didn’t really take into consideration how elementary certain breast pumps are, and how most women have little to no variation in the products. Also, women have to suffer constant discomfort and embarrassment in the face of men while breastfeeding, something that I also didn’t take into consideration

The most important article was Susannah Felt’s “Astonish Me”. I found this article to be the most impactful because it reminded me to enjoy each of the experiences I have in my life. So often we are worried about what is to come and what we should do next rather than enjoying the moment and memories we are creating in that moment. “Astonish Me” also reminded me to not allow technology and information to ruin or interfere with my first hand experiences of different events that occur throughout my lifetime. So many times we are encouraged to take in all the information we have access to; however, Felt encourages us to embrace our in person experiences rather than allowing technology to dilute the experience.

The article “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” was most important to me because as a woman, this is something that I will have to deal with in the future. It addressed the issues in not only the workplace but also public spaces, but also how men, as well as women, can be judgemental toward public pumping. This technology could help the majority of mothers and I hope that it can be sold for a price that isn't ridiculous relatively soon.

Sophie Brickman's article was most important to me as it exposed me to the world of businesswomen who are also mothers and how difficult doing both tasks at the same time. Which also gave me a greater respect for my mother and what she had to do to take care of myself on her own while also working her job full time. Chris W.

Sophie Brickman’s “The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump” stuck out to me because it helped me understand the hardships mothers have to face when breast feeding and working. It’s an aspect of the workplace that needs a major revamping. I enjoyed the products the mothers were creating to help with this issue, but this topic should be talked about more as well. When I was a child I had to go to work with my mother, so for single moms especially, more talk about mothers in the workplace is important.

Over the course of the semester, I believe the article of "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos" had the largest impact on me. Before this I did not think of space as much more than just an empty vacuum, however, just like we impact our own environment on Earth, we also impact the environment in space. We should look for ways to limit the waste that is sometimes lost in space.

The article that stood out to me the most was Brickman's excerpt about women and the business world. The reason that it stood out to me is because growing up, I was raised by a single mother who works in the IT field which is notorious for being highly dominated by males. Due to this, she has had to fight more than the average person to receive the much earned attention that she got while also raising me and my 2 siblings on top of that. I admired the fact that this story brought light to an issue that is very common in our world today and it gives inspirations to others in that area and lets them know that they are not alone in life.

The article that was most important to me is Caitlin Kuehn's “Of Mothers and Monkeys”. The article addresses a strong ethical issue within the medical community pertaining to rather or not it is just to use animals for medical research. The reason why it's significant to me is that it addresses a dilemma relevant to the career field that I'm currently pursuing, thus, provoking me to think on a deeper level. This ethical dilemma was both multifaceted and relevant to me.

The article that was most important to me was Susannah Felt's "Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information" because it really opened my eyes to enjoy living in the moment. In the article it said "It will be my parents' last eclipse; it will be my daughter's first"(247), that made me think that life is short so we should enjoy it while we can with the people we love. ~Demetria J.

From all the readings we had this semester the article "Astonish Me: Anticipating an Eclipse in the Age of Information" had the most impact. It really stressed to me the importance of living in the moment and enjoying one another as well as nature. It was very realistic and relocatable. Technology has become so important and a lot of our time is spent on it.

The article that meant the most to me was, "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump." It was article different from the ones we typically read. It showed how limited women voices are in the workforce, even when the machinery or topic is pertaining to women. It was an eye-opening article, not in the way that it’s a first discovery, but it was something I didn't think much about buys should be.

Ross Andersen's Pleistocene Park" was a very impactful article for me to read. The article had reintroduced me to the concept of global warming, which is an important issue that Earth is currently dealing with. This article gave me hope in thinking that global warming isn't a phenomenon that is impossible to combat. Andersen had also opened my mind by introducing me to Nikita's Earth-saving project.

I believe that Caitlin Kuehn's "Of Mothers and Monkeys" had the most impact on me. They struggle with work and her mother must have been really hard on her mind, I can't imagine have to be her and going into work everyday questioning if what your doing is right if it means saving your mother. It also stands to question, Where does it stop, Where is the line drawn, and can you stop before that line?

The article that was most meaningful to me was "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump." I liked how it showed how women had a voice and can have a huge impact on mothers in the future with that technology. And this article was very different from most articles we read so it was really kept my interest while reading it. It shows a small part of the struggles women go through, especially entrepreneur women and mothers at that.

The article most important to me was The Squeeze: Silicone Valley reinvents the Breast Pump. I think it is important for more employers take into account the difficulties women face in a work environment and outside of one as well. This really shows that men don’t pay attention of women’s needs in the workforce and that needs to change.

The article that was most useful to me was Sophie Brickman's "The squeeze silicon valley reinvents the breast pump'". This article was the most memorable. I am not a mother however the article allowed me to put myself in a mother's shoes. having to need a device that is outdated and neglected in society is astonishing. It's awesome that people are working to create technologically advanced devices for mothers to efficiently use.

The article that meant the most to me is Ceridwen Dovey's "Dr. Space Junk Unearths the Cultural Landscape of the Cosmos." This article really hit home because it further illustrated the notion that space travel really isn't that far away or undeniable anymore. It also was a warning to us reading the article that humans not only polite the earth, but are capable of polluting outer space as well, which is a scary thought.

I believe that the "Dr. Space Junk" Article was the most important to me because I have a deep interest in space. I am worried about our species not being able to travel through space due to the massive amount of debris that is floating through our atmosphere. Hopefully we can find a way around this problem in the future.

The article that I was most touched by was "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump." This is because it really opened my eyes to the many problems women face while breatfeeding using products that are not as efficient as they should be. The fact that people are coming up with better ways to make breast pumps is a great thing especially with all of the enhancements in technology today.

For me, the article that touched me most was, "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump." It really made me stop and think about what women go through in the workplace and what I may go through, one day when I am a mother. The fact that people are looking into things now to make this normal part of life, that so many women go through, more comfortable makes me feel a little better. In addition, I think only women should have opinions/ideas on problems women suffer from. Women coming up with these ideas makes me more confident in their success.

The article that meant the most to me was "The Squeeze: Silicon Valley Reinvents the Breast Pump". I liked this article because it expressed the stigma that females fight on an everyday basis. It also shows its not always other people that you are fighting against, it is your own. The importance of respecting other peoples belief and opinions is huge in this article and everyday life for people. While the discussion of public breastfeeding has been controversial for some time, no one seems to want to address the struggles mothers face when it comes to finding the right materials and time to pump their breasts. Outsiders do not realize the limits mothers face, whether it is financial, due to the high cost of breast pumps, or occupational, like working in an office that offers no space for a woman to comfortably pump/breastfeed.
