This interactive chart visualizes Jay Z’s music by the runtime. By hovering over the individual blocks, users can learn information such as the album title, album song, song length, and song producer. The blocks are linked by producers. When you select a box, all of the songs by that producer are highlighted. Readers have a chance to interpret how much music a single producer has contributed to Jay Z’s entire body of work (from his 12 solo albums).
The bigger the block, the longer the length of the song. The boxes are color coordinated to align with the specific albums identified on the right.
By visualizing information, we are encouraging readers to interact with large bodies of data concerning an artist’s work. We’ve found that this approach to presenting information can foster rewarding engagements with massive and complicated content.
