Returning to the SIUE/East St. Louis Charter School

Between 2005 and 2007, I spent a considerable amount of time working with students at the SIUE/East St. Louis Charter School. I primarily worked with Alsandyra Essien andc her 10th grade English classes. We covered poetry, started a newspaper, and we took trips to Cincinnati and Chicago.

Between 2007 and spring 2013, I directed the Black Studies Program at SIUE, which limited the time that I spent at the Charter School. But just as my term as director ended last semester, I heard from Professor Vicki Scott, from the School of Education at SIUE, who asked me to assist her and Professor Danice Brown in coordinating a program for students at the Charter school.  So, I've made my return.

Aside from the assistant director, Willis Young, and only a couple of others, the teachers and staff at the school are fairly new to me. We've been working with a group of 9th and 10th graders at the school for much of the semester. We'll continue next semester as well.
