Reflections on the Art of Choosing so far

Haley Scholars Spring 2013 Reading Groups

We've covered a few chapters in Sheena Iyengar's The Art of Choosing so far. We've looked at issues related to cultural background and cognitive dissonance among other issues.

Of the issues that we've covered, what's one topic addressed by Iyengar that you have found particularly noteworthy? Why?

I've found the topic of cultural background noteworthy because it is important for people to understand that their are differences between cultures and practices. Every ones cultural differences should be valued equally, and people should accept the fact that every one has their own beliefs. If people do not realize this it leads to ethnocentrism and close mindedness.

I find the cultural diversity topic noteworthy because a lot of people do not understand other cultures, therefor looking down upon it. Every culture should be able to follow their own set of rules and should be valued equally throughout society just like any other culture. If we all keep an open mind we can coexist peacefully and respectfully.

The topic I find most noteworthy is cultural background. I have always been interested in the way other cultures and societies interact with each other. I feel it is important, especially for individualistic cultures, to learn about collectivist cultures because those cultures help each other instead of themselves first. I feel that if we could learn a thing or two from other cultures, we as a society, would be able to better live peacefully.

I believe the most note worthy topic was cultural background. I believe this is most noteable because many people don't know of others cultures. People should get familiar with the cultures throughout the world instead of judging because if you get familiar with what they do, then it could be similar to something that is familiar with your culture. People need to stop judging cultures and make it their part to familiarize their self with different types of cultures.

I think just the whole idea of culture background is interesting. It is something that I never really thought of and I am sure others my age don't really think of either. Seeing people of other cultures you think they are different but not why they are different. Everyone is raised in a different way with different social norms. Everyone thinks their way is "right" too. I guess everyone just needs to see there is no "right" or "wrong."

I think the issue of cognitive dissonance was very interesting. I think it is important for people to understand that form of frustration surrounding conflicting thoughts/actions is normal. I think it is equally important to find a way to manage and sort out your thoughts rather than fall victim of the stress therefore making a quick decision rather than a good one.
