Stephen Henderson's Understanding the New Black Poetry
Part of what makes Stephen Henderson's Understanding the New Black Poetry: Black Speech and Black Music as Poetic References (1973) such an important anthology of the era was because seemed to be something more than just a collected body of poems. Henderson devotes considerable energies to illuminating black components of black poetry in the extended introduction of the work. Rarely do popular anthologies go to such lengths to situate the poets and poetry in distinct cultural or racial contexts.
