Black Studies in February

A look at our upcoming programming for February. We'll also run a blog series: 28 Ways of Thinking about Black Studies & Afrofuturism.

• Feb. 1, Wednesday - Black Studies2.0 - An exhibit, which will run through Feb. 16, at the Morris University Art Gallery. The exhibit focuses on how our program has utilized technology, digital humanities, and  a framework known as afrofuturism to shape and invigorate black studies projects. Location: MUC Gallery

• Feb. 1, Wednesday - Public Thinking Activity - 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - A public thinking exercise for members of the Haley Scholars Program. We also celebrate the opening of our exhibit. All are welcome. Location: MUC Gallery

• Feb. 1, Wednesday - Cindy Lyles & Danielle Hall Reading – 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. - Our program coordinators will participate in a university Black Heritage Month opening celebration. Location: Goshen Lounge 

• Feb. 2, Thursday - Stacey Brown discusses reading - 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. - A listening activity featuring recordings of poet Stacey Brown discussing her approaches to reading as well as her interest in works by major poets. Location: MUC Gallery 

• Feb. 2, Thursday - Notations on the Golden Age of Hip Hop - 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. - A listening activity featuring few select notable works from one of rap's heydays. Location: MUC Gallery

• Feb. 9, Thursday - Inspirational Black Women Poets - 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. - A listening exhibit featuring works by inspiring black women poets Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, and Sonia Sanchez. Location: MUC Gallery

• Feb. 10, Friday - Mixed Media Exhibit - 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. - A mixed media exhibit featuring African American poetry and images from the Eugene B. Redmond Collection. Location: Columbus Elementary School

• Feb. 14, Tuesday - Black Poetry Study Session  - 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. & 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. - A series of small group discussions of African American poetry.

• Feb. 15, Wednesday - Public Thinking Activity - 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - A public thinking exercise for members of the Haley Scholars Program. Location: MUC Gallery

• Feb. 16, Thursday - The Malcolm X Mixtape - 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. - A mixed media exhibit featuring an audio production of music by long-time contributor Dometi Pongo. Location: MUC Gallery 

• Feb. 16, Thursday - Black Studies Book Sale - 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. - A book sale featuring books by and about African Americans. Location: MUC Gallery 

• Feb. 23, Thursday - Black Poetry Study Session  - 9:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. - A series of small group discussions of African American poetry.

Yes, the plan is for us to post a series of videos based on the gallery. We'll post one in the next few days.
