October Journeys: Upcoming projects

"Go in the bright blaze of Autumn's equinox." --from "October Journey" by Margaret Walker

We've been pushing hard over the last month with all kinds of projects and activities. We thought of it as prep for our hardest push yet during the month of October.

We begin the month with a week of events related to slavery.

Our Underground Freedom Galleries project focuses on interpretations of enslavement and struggles for freedom represented in African American literature. We also highlight responses from students.

On Monday, October 4, we'll have a display in Peck Hall, room 3117 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

On Tuesday, October 5, we'll do another version of the exhibit on the second floor of Lovejoy Library in front of the Rare Books Room from 1:15 p.m. to 3 p.m.

On Wednesday, October 6, we'll do an audio exhibit featuring poems about slavery and liberation in Peck Hall, room 3117 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

On Thursday, October 7, we present the audio exhibit again, this time, at Lovejoy Library in the Eugene B. Redmond Reading Room (Lovejoy Library, room 3003) from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

During the second week of October, on the 12th, we present our exhibit "14 Ways of Thinking About Chicago" in the EBR Reading Room from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The exhibit is part of our Thinking About Urban Spaces series.

We run an audio-visual exhibit focusing on poet Amiri Baraka in the EBR Reading Room on October 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We host a listening project, the Malcolm X Mixtape on Monday, October 18, from 1:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the EBR Reading Room. Additional venues to be announced.

We host our second Haley Scholars Public Thinking Event on October 20 in the Goshen Lounge from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

On October 26, we host a mixed media exhibit Style, Politics, and Black women @ SIUE from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the EBR Reading Room. Additional venues to be announced.

Please join us for one or two or seven of our public projects in October.

Quite the schedule! These events are (have been) great. Clearly worth the viewing for both students and faculty.
