Bringing back the book fair

It's been a while since I hosted a book fair, so I was glad to return to this practice for our recent Language Arts conference.

Each of the attendees received two free books. They got to choose from two sets -- trade paperback comic books and an assortment of regular books, which included volumes of poetry by Langston Hughes, Kevin Young, and Adrian Matejka, two autobiographies: The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and The Autobiography of Malcolm X, and other nonfiction titles such as The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration and The New Jim Crow.

I'll go ahead and admit that the guys most enjoyed the comic books. In addition to enjoying the idea of words and images, the students were familiar with the titles -- Black Panther and Batman among others -- so they were having lively conversations about superheroes, interesting story plots, and other topics related to their knowledge of comic books.
