Our article, "How The 'New York Times' Covers Black Writers" from Public Books highlights several different writers, and Toni Morrison holds a central place because she was one of the most frequently cited black writers between 1970 and 2021 in The New York Times

We also took a look at how she compared to Alice Walker, another writer who was frequently mentioned, but just not as much as Morrison over the last 50 years. You can check out our visualization to get a sense of the numbers.
