Haley Scholars (Group B) Rion Amilcar Scott's “A Loudness of Screechers”

[Haley Reading groups Fall 2021]

Rion Amilcar Scott's "A Loudness of Screechers" is a supernatural or magical tale that has a large group of menacing birds hovering over a town before then taking a human sacrifice. The story is told from the perspective of a young girl in the town.

In one interview, Scott explained his reasons for presenting magical elements in his stories. For one, he said it's fun. And second, he said that doing so "allows me to dramatize some ideas that I can’t dramatize otherwise."

Answer just one of the following questions.

What's one notable idea that you thought the story dramatized or highlighted that was possible because of the uses of magical elements?

Or

What's one way you think that composing this story with its magical elements would have been fun for a writer?

Including magical elements in a story could be fun for a writer because it can steer them away from real-world issues or even their normal genre of writing. For the author Scott, I believe he likes to turn something dark (such as human sacrifice) into something "magical" or even fun and interesting.

Adding magic elements gives you more freedom as a writer. You are free to create scenarios without the need to ground them in reality. Without worrying about real-world physics or other rules, you can address issues or elements more creatively.

The story dramatized how one must make difficult sacrifices to live a better life as seen through human sacrifice to clear away the birds. Not only did Charles make a difficult decision as he gave up his life, Sorai's mother made a hard decision to stop her husband from saving his younger brother to ensure that he would not have also gotten killed or caused something worse to happen. Although the human sacrifice was a ritual, it did not prevent Sorai from developing hard feelings towards the birds that took away her uncle, which illustrates the impact difficult sacrifices may have on other people.

I think one way composing this story with magical elements would have been fun for a writer is because it allows them to express fantasy elements that other wise would not fit into a more serious or realistic story. It is fun and relaxing from time to time to not focus on the real world and write about fantasy things that allow you to explore a parallel world where real world issues don't affect others. I would also say that it allows the author to challenge themselves and think outside of the box in ways that they otherwise would not.

I think that composing a story with magical elements may have been fun for a writer because it allows them to freely express their thoughts. Some people are so entangled in reality that they can't help but imagine the possibility of magic or other worlds outside of their own. It makes a writer when in control of their story, which is something that no one can take from them. I can imagine it to be a stress reliever.

I believe the writer may find the dark story fun and magical because it is an extension of his imagination.By being able to create a story and being able to dictate what happens may create and element of fun for the author. Also by having outlet for the author to write about whatever he wants gives the opportunity for him to make magic within his stories.

Adding magical elements to a story can be fun for an author in many ways. I feel it helps authors put ideas into context better when they can use magical elements and don’t have to worry about the seriousness when explaining an idea. They can simply use the magical elements to better portray their ideas. It helps authors in a way open up more and express themselves in different ways than the norm.

This story was very confusing in the first half. I originally thought it would involve Josh and Andrew more. But it turned around and was about her family. It was intriguing and I liked it . Did kinda leave us on a cliffhanger, but that's not the point. I wasnt expecting the magical part..because they're birds that are loud. But it was different. In a good way.. This reading reminds my of an episode of supernatural, and a live action version of red riding hood...

At first, the presence of magic was surprising, only because it was so sudden. The passages of this book have been a different experience each time. When introduced to the magical creatures from the eyes of the little girl, I thought for sure this passage would be the first light one of the book, boy was I wrong. It is made pretty clear that the little girl has little understanding of these creatures and the ways in which they work. She does not realize the depth to these creatures, and since we view the story from her eyes, we’re also in the dark about the creatures. This is what makes this story so unsettling. At the start she is excited to see the creatures, she makes a slightly light hearted joke about them attacking some annoying classmates. To her they are just an annual occurrence, she enjoys their presence and looks forward to it. As the story continues and we are given little information about some ritual that includes these creatures, we along with the little girl are confused. We can feel the tension and intensity in the house along with her, when she watches her father cry and scream against her uncle being the sacrifice, we feel a pot in our stomach much like she probably does. Everyone leaves her in the dark and suddenly she is watching as her uncle, her fathers brother and friend steps outside and is stabbed in the chest by the talons of these creatures she was fond of. The passage ends this way, and I imagine the little girl is left shocked, confused, and terrified. The audience is left with this unsettling feeling as well, the author has turned this creature that started out as this magical beauty into a nightmare for this little girl, and for us, asking what happens now? What happens to the little girls innocence, to her view of the world, to her trust in magic and adults. We don’t know, and she doesn’t know. (I tried putting this up yesterday and it must not have gone through, not sure what caused the issue)

Adding magical elements makes the story less real and in turn less stressful for the reader and the writer. Especially since there were violent elements to the story it feels better to know that this is not real.

Composing the story with magical elements would have been fun for the writer because he could use anything to express his hatred. For instance when they kept repeating “This is part of the ritual” and the father was ready to stop it, the writer was able to dig deeper into the emotions the father had.

Because it is a creation of his mind, I imagine the writer will find the grim tale amusing and fascinating. The ability to create a story and determine what transpires may provide the author with a sense of enjoyment. Additionally, having a place for the author to reflect about what he wants allows him to create magic in his works.

I think that composing something with magical elements would be fun for a writer because It takes them away from reality. As a writer that specializes in creative writing, they would already have a blast because its something that they enjoy doing. I imagine that its like being a kid again. When were kids we have very interesting imaginations. A child may have a doll and dinosaur and create some amazing world and scenario in their head while having the best time of their life. For some people, those thoughts and creative imaginations never go away so they can create being a kid all over again in a sense. The world that we live in is crazy so im sure its nice to dive in to something different. Humans tend to enjoy content like this because it takes us away for a minute as well from the audience point of view.

Because of the use of magical elements, what makes the story dramatizing to me was the magical creatures she was so fond off. Because of her uncle being the sacrifice and the pain in which it caused the family especially as her dad was crying. We see this happen through her eyes so we were kept in the dark as she was so when the creatures killed them I was shocked.

I think adding the magical elements was fun for the writer because this gave the writer a chance to be able to talk about things people in the real world would be sensitive about. For the author this was a chance for him to be creative and make people use their imagination. Also adding these magical elements gives writers freedom as mentioned earlier. Meaning that if they have a hard time talking about something, then this is a way for them to express it especially if they’re talking about the real world.

Victoria C said...

Writing a story with magical elements is arguably more fun to write than for example a nonfiction story. An author can be free to do whatever he wants, even if it is so far out of the ordinary. Writing is were someone with an active imagination can put together an image that everyone can see.

Using magical elements by writers is fun due to the fact that the story becomes their own world. They are able to make creatures of their own choosing and showcase their imaginations and ideas as writers to the readers. Reality limits one's imaginations.

I believe one aspect of the story that was dramatized due to the use of magical elements in the story is the idea of death. As we see in the text, Uncle Charles is killed by the screechers, and Sorai's father, Reynold, could do nothing to save his brother because Charles was a "sacrifice". As Uncle Charles is being attacked and killed by the screechers, we see him being swooped away in the sky.

In real life, a carnivorous bird is not randomly attacking or taking humans away, but when people do die, it does feel as if they are being snatched away from you, and sometimes there is nothing you can do to stop death.

Magical elements are essential in story. It allows more room for freedom and creativity. The writer to use their imagination which can be endless. Additionally, it will allow the writer a moment to escape from the world which can be very relieving, as this world is stressful and something is always occurring, especially living conditions we face today, along with coronavirus and vaccines. Other issues and conerns can be addressed without as much restriction.

Writing a story with magical emblems could be more fun for an author because it allows you to think more freely. You no longer are held to the standards of reality and instead, you can make your own world of existence. There are no bounds on you because its a world you created. Everyday can be painted red or green, and every person could have 19 eyeballs and speak with their minds. Reality is stripped and its almost akin to being a god in someways.

Human sacrifice was dramatized in this story, but held some truth. I don't think they needed any use of magical elements to portray the sacrifice, but I understand that it brought the story to life because it was kind of gruesome. I could only imagine how big these birds were, but I was more upset that the adults wouldn't kill the birds. It would've saved them a lot more time, but I'm sure it was a reason they avoided conflict with these creatures.

The writer composing the story with magical elements eliminates the constraints that “real life” has. I appreciated the magical elements because it makes the story more interesting, and I feel like it can reveal a lot more about the writer. If they are limited to actual real life scenarios, then the story may lack some creativity and self-expression. Self-expression can be powerful when it comes to topics of race, gender, and trauma. The author knew that he couldn’t fully tell his story unless he used elements of magic.

I had thought the story was very confusing in the beginning until after I finished reading the pieces, whole story made sense. I am not sure what real world concept was trying to be dramatized by the use of magic, but the whole concept of this story was very interesting. The magical element for sure kept me engaged in the story, because I wanted to understand the background and existence of these so called screechers. But the beginning of the story seemed so natural, as if the kids were used to these birds, but then as I read more I see they were apart of everyday life almost. This short story I would encourage to be made in a full book, the idea is cool. I feel the the add of magical elements helps the writer escape reality for a moment and think outside of the box of of a world that would be very wild and crazy to live in. It gives a writer a sort of stress relief, because writing about the impossible opens up your mind so much.

I think that composing a story using magical elements would be more fun for a writer because it reduces the limitations that reality can sometimes set. It also gives the writer more opportunities to include metaphors or symbols for the reader to discover. It seems that using magical elements in a story would help the writer tap into their imagination and make the story more interesting. I also think that the use of magical elements may make the story more realistic if the writer uses the fantasy aspects to discuss their message or point in a way that maybe wouldn't be so understandable otherwise.

I believe that adding touches of magic to a story would be fun to a writer strictly based on their freedom of expression. It's a way to give another side of them, that normally wouldn't be taken seriously in the real world. I think writing a story with magical elements like this could have been fun for a writer because it allows you to write stories that have realistic aspects that make the readers feel that it's relatable and something that they can connect to while adding creativity and a twist to the storyline. Adding something unexpected that provides shock value or adding that touch of being overdramatic is what having magical elements allow, and it not only could be fun for the writer to explore these fun imaginative possibilities, but also allows the readers to think about themselves and resonate with stories in an imaginative/creative realm as well. It's very typical for us to read something that's something we can relate to, or feel that we've experienced, but I think it's something fun and youthful about reading stories that require you to use your imagination and more creative self to connect with the writings.

When magical elements is included within a story it could be fun as a writer because it could be the writers escape route or source to fantasize or create a world of interests where the real world doesn't have to offer. The author for this specific story likes to have a dark twist on things to make it seem more interesting or fun. It gives the writer the opportunity to think differently, to use their thoughts and creativity to think of something unique. This is a great way for the author to truly express themselves with little to know limitations on their creative mindsets.

The two main ways I think bringing magical elements in us fun for a writer is including your own magical tales and bring new ideas that you didn't think off. When writing the author can include mythical and magical tales they learned growing up and use those stories to make a personal connections. Using that personal experience is fun because you then think of concepts to tell the story like you were taught. Giving your writing a different style and fun personal take.

A notable idea the author manipulated to heighten the dramatization and achieve the eerie imagery they were seeking, was the use of the birds and the sky. Through describing and illustrating how the "sky turned black with a loudness of screechers flying in impossible patterns," and that through the "ragged feathers" light was able to peek through in cracks between the wings, the author successfully used magical elements. - Mahlik G.

Writing a story with magical elements gives you more creative freedom. People are more willing to accept heavy concepts if it's wrapped in a fantasy coating. It's this exactly reason why adult animated cartoons are still around today. People think if it's animated and the characters are childish or cartoon-like, then it must be fine. Its just pretend, right? However, if the a show like Family Guy or Big Mouth was performed with actual human, people wouldn't have been so accepting to it. Magical elements allow a creator to say what they really mean with less repercussions.

And then the author created a ritual in which the uncle sacrificed himself to the screechers. A ritual that was not elaborated as to add to the magic and mystery.

I think adding magical elements is fun for writers because they have more freedom and flexibility in their writing. A writer can make the story as realistic or imaginative as they would like. They could also incorporate magical elements to everyday situations or real stories to make the main points more impactful. It can also make a more serious topic more lighthearted.

Honestly the story confused me I didn’t really understand it but I did understand the Concept of it a little bit. The part of the story I thought that was notable in the beginning of the story he was like “go somewhere before I call that screeched down to snatch y’all”, then he said “there was a smile on my face that poisoned my words, made them sound joyful” like him just said some magical made the birds make a noise or like the birds heard him and knew exactly what to do.

Initially, I did like the story. I think that having magical moments would be a lot more entertaining. Depending on the person will depend on if it is something of interest. Magical moments/elements create the flexibility to appease to more crowds. It also gives writers more of an opportunity to be creative and implement things that are not expected.

One way I believe constructing the magical parts to the story would be fun for a writer of a story like this is the ability to be able to create your own world. World building is fun because you are the one who decides every little thing about it, whether Mondays are called Mondays or Mondays are called Friday. Are the police armed with guns or bubble shooters? I think the fact that possibilities are endless makes it so exciting.

I feel the freeness and exploration you can indulge in while filling a story with magical entities is the most attractive aspect of doing so. Being able to visually or verbally relay the most creative parts of your mind to the audience is something special and intriguing.

I believe that the idea that "life isn't fair" in the sense that there are things that are bigger than us and that we cannot control is a message that was dramatized by the magic in this story. The dismay that we feel when we lose someone in a manner that we perceived as senseless can be felt when the father knew that his younger brother, Charles, was going to be taken from then despite him doing everything the right way.
