Haley Reading Group: Black Panther, Chapter 2

[Haley Reading groups Fall 2020]

One of Ta-Nehisi Coates's many notable contributions to his run on Black Panther was his presentation or reworking of the Dora Milaje. The group were originally created years before Coates took on the comic book, and their role was to serve as bodyguards for Black Panther.

Coates narrates a tale of two of the women, Ayo and Anneka, taking on different roles, as they are compelled to rethink their roles as mere protectors. They are leading an uprising of sorts.

Based on what you covered in chapter 2 of Black Panther, what thoughts did you have about Ayo and Anneka or the depiction of their experiences and actions?

After Ayo and Anneka help set the women free they have a conversation. And in this conversation, I feel like we really get to see what they want. Based on their previous actions and what they say we know that they are not happy with the way their country, Wakanda, is. Their actions, to me, show that they will do anything to be happy, together, and make their country a better place and get it back to what they know and love.

In the book, Ayo and Aneka beginning to make a plan shows that they care so much deeply about the Wakanda Kingdom. The graphics used here really help to show how much they care about the Wakanda Kingdom and strong desires to build a better kingdom by making plans so that there will be peace and happiness.

In the end of chapter 1, we see the how Ayo saves Anneka and reveals that she stole both of the midnight angels prototypes. In chapter 2 we see the infiltration of the prison and how Ayo and Anneka saves the girls from the prison. This reveals that their intentions are for good as the "prisoners" seemed to be held for wrong reasons.

After the successful raid. It is suggested that there is no plan further than that, until she pulls up the map with red dots in each of the tribes. The depiction of their actions reveals that they are not a force of evil, but a force of good. It is likely we see the Black Panther request help from them in the future.

A thought that I have about the actions of Ayo and Aneka specifically Ayo, is that I found it interesting that Ayo went against her mothers wishes even though the mother wants the best for wakanda just like she does. Its like a fork in the road where Ayo went one way with saving wakanda by saving Aneka and having an uprising, and the mother doing it another way involving T'challa.

My initial reaction to Ayo and Anneka was that they are two prideful woman who will do anything to get their way. I admire the relationship they have and also their drive to restore Wakanda back to its former glory.

After watching them rescue the women one of my first thoughts was they are fighting for women they see are similar to themselves. Women that are being held as prisoners but also women that are being abused by men. I feel that Ayo and Anneka just want to be happy together and want Wakanda to go back to the good days and not the decaying dying country it is at the moment.

Ayo and Anneka’s experiences and actions show me passion more than anything. Passion when it comes to not only protecting each other but also their country. They both know that Wakanda is self-destructing, and they both want to change is as much as they can. And in changing it, they seek more so happiness than stability, which really sets the bar higher for the amount of effort they need to change Wakanda.

Based on Ayo and Anneka's conversation at the beginning of the chapter, I can really tell just how much they love Waskanda. They both talked in great detail about how much they would and wanted to do to protect Wakanda and all of its different people.

When Ayo and Aneka come to save the girls it shows you how much they care because they are willing to risk their lives for a good cause. Afterwards when they have their conversation, you get to see their true intentions and that they really deeply care for the Wakandan kingdom along with their love for each other. They genuinely care for the future of the kingdom.

In chapter 2 , the creation that kilmonger has made still affects Wakanda even though he is dead. Ayo and Anneka are captured and in jail , they save the girls from the prison. After saving the girls the intentions help them and the prisoners. I like how the part in the chapter with T'challa , it seems like an internal conflict he has battling with something or someone.

We get a chance to see the relationship of Aneka and Ayo in this chapter more when they talk about coming up with a plan. They exuded pride for Wakanda and wanted the best for their people.

In chapter 2 we see how Aneka and Ayo want to bring balance and peace to Wakanda and that they would do at great length. We also see how they will have each other back even if one doesn't have the right mindset on what they should do as we see when they were discussing farther plans of what they should do next.

After reading chapter one of this book, I thought Ayo and Aneka were criminals who sought to take control over Wakanda for themselves. But now, I see that those two are seeking to set Wakanda back to its glorious self by doing anything necessary, which might include sacrificing themselves.

In the first two chapters we see Ayo helping Aneka escape from jail and then fight these bad men that are taking girls. We see that their vision is for a better country, and they would do anything for their country. They may get in trouble for what they are doing, but they are doing it for the greater good.

After reading thee second chapter, the true devotion of Ayo and Anneka were highlighted and they did all that they could to keep their love and to regain the integrity of a Wakanda. The couple realized the struggling state of their country and made plans to do whatever required to make their civilization right again.

I think that Ayo is someone that will do anything for the best of her people even if others aren’t okay with it, Like her mother wasn’t. I feel as if Anneka is the same way as they are both very prideful women.

In the second chapter Ayo and Anneke were clearly focused on restoring the good within Wakanda. They believed that everyone deserved a cherished feeling from Wakanda.
