Academic Journeys project

Academic Journeys is an oral history project I created that features interviews with black students at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). Since 2018, my student assistants and I have completed more than two hundred interviews with students.

We ask them about their majors and minors, hobbies, support systems, and barriers along the way of earning their college degrees. We speak with them about reasons why they have decided to change directions as they've progressed.

Since 2000, the enrollment of African American students at SIUE has increased in notable ways. Yet, I realized I have almost no formal records of student experiences over the many years I have been here. As a result, I decided to establish this program.

What follows are links to short writings about the project.
