The Leadership Forum and The Warmth of Other Suns

On Tuesday, January 19, we began distributing Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns for the roughly 100 students participating in our Haley online reading group this semester.

This semester's reading group project is funded by the Leadership Forum -- an extracurricular learning program that my colleagues Tisha Brooks, Elizabeth Cali, and I created to enhance opportunities for students. In addition to our reading group, members from the Leadership Forum will contribute posts and assist with "Public Thinking" events that will concentrate on the Great Migration (1910–1930) and the Second Great Migration (1940–1970), where large numbers of African Americans moved from the South to the North, Midwest and West.

Relatively few African American students have been actively involved in "honors" programming at the university over the last decade. One of the goals of Leadership forum is to address that under-slight by making sure African American students get opportunities to participate in extracurricular projects like this one.
