Visualizing histories -- Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House
It's been exciting thinking through the histories of the Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House starting with the images. I had heard bits and pieces about the organization over the years. However, encountering hundreds of photographs concerning the early decades of the organization's activities have really assisted in shaping my understanding of the people associated with the Neighborhood House over a long stretch of time.
Our preservation project prompted me to start doing more research on the organization and think more about changes in East St. Louis and among its citizens. As I looked through the images, I became increasingly curious about this social service organization and how it was bringing people together and assisting them.
What began as a photograph scanning activity has quickly also become a research project about the Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House.
