Young Scientist Program visits SIUE/East St. Louis Charter School

Once again, the organizing efforts of the good sister Danice Brown saved the day.

On Thursday, March 12, Professor Brown invited members of the Young Scientist Program (YSP) to coordinate a session for our after-school program at the SIUE/East St. Louis Charter High School. Members of the YSP's  Forensics team -- Wing Lam, Zuzana Kocsisova, and Luis Sandoval -- coordinated a forensics science activity.

Our students were tasked with utilizing science to examine the scene of a small (fictive) crime. They analyzed handwriting, and they tested different fabrics left at the scene. After gathering the evidence, they discussed their findings and made guesses about who they felt was guilty of the theft.

Overall, the activity gave the students a really interactive and fun way to participate in scientific learning. There is considerable interest among our group in mysteries and especially aspects of television dramas that highlight forensics, so the activity coordinated by the Young Scientist Program was well received.

The activities also expanded everyone's views of what's possible with science. The Forensics team members were knowledgeable, personable, and, hmmm, patient, with our always lively group. No question, we plan to reach out to the Young Scientist Program again in the future.
