Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Chapter 11 “Proper Sleep”

[Behind the Beautiful Forevers]

In chapter 11 “Proper Sleep” of Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo begins with the investigation of Kalu’s death. Traumatized by his experiences with Annawadi police, Abdul immediately believes he will be falsely accused and imprisoned for Kalu’s murder. With fear and accusations filling the streets, several Annawadi boys flee the slum which ultimately led to the Sanjay committing suicide.

Boo writes “After Kalu’s death, five of the road boys were picked up and taken to the Sahar Police Stations “unofficial” cell. They were beaten in the name of an investigation and released with the understanding that, if they didn’t stay away from the increasingly elegant airport, they might find themselves charged with Kalu’s murder. The boys didn’t know that the police had already filed away the case as a natural death” (286-287).

Based on the reading, what are your thoughts on the overall mood or energy of Annawadi after the deaths of Fatima, Kalu, and Sanjay?

Based on the reading, the mood in Annawadi after the deaths is one of grieving. Some of the neighborhood boys were not shocked by the deaths as if they were common. Abdul was still traumatized by his beating. However, Sunil took it the hardest, because it was not just another body, Kalu was his bestfriend.

Based on the reading, I would say the mood in Annawadi is dark. Everything happening in such a short period of time feels unpredictable and kind of scary. Many are scared for their own safety, and do not want to fall under blame for what is happening. Obviously Sunil took it pretty hard because of his friendship with Kalu. But overall, it is a dark and sad mood in Annawadi.

From the reading, the mood after the deaths didn't seem like grief but I felt this dark and fearful energy. The fact that the police threatened to falsely accused the boys of murder was very corrupt and they were taking advantage of their power. The deaths were sad overall because people (like Sunil) were affected and genuinely cared about the victims.

Kalu's death was particularly hard on Sunil because Kalu was his best friend. The deaths greatly affected the population of young males in Annawadi. They now fear being unjustly accused of murder even when a murder has been labeled natural. The police was using these murders to keep the scavengers of Annawadi in check. This caused the mood to become very dark, sad, and fearful.

There is definitely a oppressive mood of darkness. It's come down on the village--harder on some than others. It's not a safe time in Annawadi, everything seems to be tinkering along the edge of a massive cliff.

I would say that the overall mood is that of both mourning and it is tense. Everyone is, for their own reasons, saddened by some or all of the deaths. They were a blow to all of Annawadi. However, the recent events have caused tension and could give raise to negative actions. There is the potential that the deaths can be the catalyst to the mounting tensions in Annawadi.

The overall feelings of Annawadi seemed to be of grief and fear. Everyone was fearful to even discuss the true cause of Kalu's death and the reason Sanjay killed himself. I feel they were probably right to be afraid of what the truth would do if it got out because the police and government were very corrupt. They most likely would've found a way to blame some of Annawadi's residents for the deaths.

From the deaths occurring in Annawadi, there is a chaotic disorder filled within the hearts of many. The boys are frightened for they know, if charged, they have no power to stop from being considered guilty. The officers oppress them continuously even while the people mourn.

Overall, I would say that the recents deaths in Annawadi had some negative effects on their population. It seems like the city became very shaken, all subdued in a mild depression over the lost souls; and Sunil became a shadow as he literally lost a piece of him.

Although one would think that the mood would be sadness and a lot of grief, I believe that the energy is negative and the mood is dark and depressing. All of a sudden people are dying and not to mention the police could careless about the lives of the poor people who flood the town. They are fearful of their own lives being taken away because they know that at any moment they could be blamed for something they didn't do and that they are not important enough to miss.

After the deaths of Fatima, Kalu, and Sanjay, the overall energy of Annawadi can be best described as chaotic. Families of the deceased are confused and are wanting to know what caused the deaths of their loved ones, while possibly looking for someone to blame. Annawadians who may have some insight into the family members' questions are fearful of responding and are wanting to protect themselves from harm's way.

The overall mood of Annawadi is depressing after the deaths of Fatima, Kalu and Sanjay. The energy is negative and the city is chaotic. The people of the town are confused about what is causing people to die all of the sudden and the police are not helping them to figure out what is going on in the city. Overall the city seems chaotic and those leaving in the city seem to be confused and scared.
