Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Chapter 7

[Behind the Beautiful Forevers]

In chapter 7 “The Come-Apart” of Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Fatima constructs a new story that implicates the Husain family for ultimately causing her to attempt suicide, which she believes will hurt their business and profit her handsomely. Meanwhile, Abdul and Karam are held in the local jail while police and government officials blackmail the family for their freedom.

Boo writes “As they lay on the tiles, Karam attempted to convince his son that the police didn’t really believe they’d tried to murder Fatima. By now, he whispered, the officers would have at least have some sense of what had actually happened, given the hundreds of witnesses” (191).

Now that Fatima has died from her burns, what do you predict about the future of the Husain family?

In my opinion, the Husain family will be persecuted. It is known from previous chapters that they are not well liked. From their ancestral connections and their ability to remain financially stable through Abdul’s work while other families struggle. The community in which they live in is constantly in survival mode. Thus, the other families will more than likely not come to the aid of the Husain family but allow them to wallow in jail and the other members fight to survive.

I believe Fatima succeeded in putting the Hussains back for now. Zehrunisa will find a way to get Abdul and Karam out of jail. She seems very resourceful and willing to pay what money they have. Kehkashan may have a harder time because as a pretty woman the police may want to keep her around longer. It may take a while but the Hussains will eventually come back up.

Fatima did succeed in her plan, but I'm sure she didn't didn't know this scheme would cost her life too. As for the Hussain family, I believe someone will be charged for murder especially since she died. Their family will be devastated if Zehrunisa isn't able to get them out. They have finances and can probably pay her back, but it will just take a while. It is just shocking the lengths people will go for even a small token of riches.

The Husain family will be persecuted by both the police and their fellow Annawasians . Because Fatima died, it doesn't matter if she burned herself or not; people will be trying to save face. The police will want to look like they have strength and will charge them. The Annawasians will not want to look bad by supporting a family that would attack a disabled women. One this is certain: the Husain family has hard times ahead.

I think the Husain family is in for even more trouble now that Fatima has died. She was the only one that could possibly clear their name and she is gone now (not that I think she would have anyway). Also, the police are going to pin everything on the family just because they can. I don't think they have the money to "clear" their name.

The Husain family will undoubtedly have to face consequences for a crime that they did not commit. As stated in Chapter 8, "inciting a person to attempt suicide is a serious crime in India" (183). Even though the Husain did not persuade Fatima to set herself on fire, there is enough falsified evidence and public displays of tension for Abdul, Kehkashan, and Karam to go to jail for a long time. Now that Fatima has passed, Abdul, Kehkashan, and Karam will definitely face jail time.

Now that Fatima has died, I think that the Husain family will continue to be blackmailed by the different police officers and Asha. If the family doesn't pay them all what they want, they will probably stick with the claim that Abdul, Karam, and Kehkashan caused Fatima's death and they will all go to jail. Also, even if the family did manage to pay, I think the officers will probably still just report what they want.

I feel that Zehrunisa will be able to get her family out for the right amount of money. However, they will probably struggle once they are out and have to start over. Plus it will probably take a long time. Some of the people from Annawadia will chatize them for Fatima's death, but other's will know the truth and may try to help them.

Now that Fatima has passed I believe that the Hassan family will be prosecuted and sent to jail. Fatima is dead so there is no one but the word of the family who can account for her death, and the family is known as having a low socioeconomic status so therefore they wouldn't be missed in the community.

Fatima intended to hurt the Hussain's business by burning herself, but she is going to hurt much more than that. I predict that the Hussain family will definitely do jail time. Fatima planted enough evidence for the police to convict them of murder.

The Husain family will have to face consequences even though they did not commit the crime. There is enough evidence that shows that the Husain family was harassing her. Because Fatima died, whether the Husain family burned her or not, the police will continue to blackmail them. I think the death of Fatima is just ammunition for the Annawasians. They already did not like the Husain family so now it is a good chance that the Husain family may even face death themselves.

I also think they'll be persecuted. It doesn't matter their innocence; there is evidence which supports Fatima's claims.
