Natural hair chronicles: Aiesha Pettis

Aiesha Pettis interviewed by Briana Whiteside

How long have you been natural?
I ventured over to the natural world during my senior year of college in January of 2012. Therefore, I have been natural for a little over 2 years
What prompted you to go natural?
First off, I wanted to become natural because I wanted to give my hair a break from all of the harsh chemicals that are in perms and color dye. After I started to grow out my perm, I began to feel empowered. I feel that I am able to express myself through my natural hair. And I can now see that natural hair was designed for me.
In one word, how would you describe your journey?
Empowering
If you could talk to our younger sisters who are natural, what would you tell them?
I will tell them to love their naps! When deciding to go natural, you don't have to partake in the BIG CHOP. I transitioned, although it made being natural a bit harder and frustrating, it was all worth it in the end. It may also seem discouraging at first, but after a few years you will begin to see the effects of being natural. Don't be afraid to try new hairstyles, you DO have options. You Tube will become your best friend! Also, remember these 3 words: love, care, and moisture!
