The Underground Reading Group
The Underground Reading Group is a collective learning activity that provides participants with opportunities to share and exchange ideas with fellow SIUE students. The program is designed to raise consciousness related to African American artistic thought and prevalent social and historical issues by concentrating on a selection of books.
For Fall 2012, we will cover:
Crave Radiance: New and Selected Poems 1990-2010 by Elizabeth Alexander
The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight against Medical Discrimination by Alondra Nelson
Dear Darkness: Poems by Kevin Young
Beginning in mid-September, visitors to the Black Studies office (Peck Hall 3402) can borrow any of the four featured books associated with the project to read and provide responses. The responses will be added to our broader collection of remarks from various readers. We will regularly showcase comments about the four books on our blog.
