The Hand I Fan With
Today and tomorrow, we're hosting an audio-visual exhibit that features a prevalent yet often overlooked cultural artifact: the church fan.
Professor of literature Candice Love Jackson initially began observing hand fans in order to understand a bygone era of black church experience, but her efforts developed into a larger investigation about the ways that church and advertising fans served as cultural artifacts that documented racial and social histories in America.
This exhibit includes a variety of hand fans from Jackson’s personal collection of materials as well as her commentary about how some of the fans display African American pride and affirmation while other fans project troubling and racist ideology.
Exhibit showing:
Tuesday, Nov. 30. 9:30 - 10:50 AM, Peck Hall 3117
