Redmond Discusses Photographing Amiri Baraka

Over the last 30-plus years, poet and literary historian Eugene B. Redmond has taken more than 1,000 photographs of Amiri Baraka. That means that along with Maya Angelou, Katherine Dunham, Sonia Sanchez, and Quincy Troupe, Baraka is one of the more frequently photographed figures in Redmond’s larger collection--a collection that includes over 100,000 photographs.

Last month, I asked Redmond how he approaches photographing Baraka these days after so many years of documentation. In the following video, Redmond describes his approach and mentions a series of shots he took of Baraka dancing with his wife Amina at a 75th birthday celebration for Baraka in October 2009, at the Schomburg in Harlem.
