MLK Day

The above image by editorial cartoonist John Sherffius provides a stimulating visual commentary for MLK day and the building excitement concerning Barack Obama’s inauguration. Sherffius’s drawing commemorates the past and looks forward.

The move to look back and forward will constitute part of our own continuing practice as we progress with the Black Studies blog during the coming months. For one, we’ll continue to draw inspiration from folks like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, and we’ll also have a new group of modern-day folks to consider.

More than focusing on select personalities though, we'll want to concentrate our attention on some of the big ideas and challenges concerning Black Studies. So, we'll continue writing about technology, visual matters, race and representation, and our various humanities projects.

Stay tuned.

What a striking image. For some reason I am loathe to call it a cartoon. BUT...why not?

Awesome.
