February Public Humanities activities

Here's a list of public humanities projects we've planned for the month.

“I own my own masters”: An exhibit on slavery references in rap music
Tuesday, February 2, 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm (Lovejoy Library)
This mixed media project addresses the presence of “slavery references” in rap music over the decades.

The Great Migration: An Exhibit
Wednesday, February 3, 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm, MUC, Goshen Lounge
This exhibit, drawing on Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns, showcases this historic movement of millions of black people from the South to the North, Midwest, and West.

The Frederick Douglass Books -- Scenes from the exhibit  
Thursday, February 11, Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm – Lovejoy Library
This exhibit highlights several editions of Frederick Douglass’s The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.

Co-sponsored by the Leadership Forum and the Black Student Union, this reception introduces students to the Eugene B. Redmond Learning Center.

This exhibit showcases books from Octavia Butler’s Patternist series and select novels by Toni Morrison.

The Natural Hair Movement: An Exhibit --  Scenes from the Natural Hair Movement exhibit
Wednesday, February 17, 12:30 - 1:30 pm – Lovejoy Library
The project provides information about a notable “movement” among black women. The exhibit focuses on the politics and implications of black women choosing to wear their hair free of chemical relaxers.

Toni Morrison: Beyond Fiction
Tuesday, February 23, 11:00 am - 1:45 pm – Lovejoy Library
Our annual production highlighting student presentations related to works by Toni Morrison.

Digital East St. Louis -- Scenes from the exhibit -- flyer
Thursday, Feb. 25, 11:00 am - 1:45 pm – Lovejoy Library
This visual notebook presents information concerning a project designed to give young people in East St. Louis early exposure to technological expertise.
