From Researcher to Researcher

Student talks to Caleb Butler about his research project

For me, one of the most important moments that occurred at Caleb Butler's research exhibit “Support and Success of African American Men at a Predominantly White Institution" took place during one of the exchanges over to the side of the exhibit. A young woman student asked why Caleb he decided to focus on black men instead of black women.

Caleb began talking with her about his research decisions and processes. At one moment, I interrupted, put my hand on the young sister's shoulder, and said, "Now that Caleb produced this project, you'll have to do a project focusing on black women."

She was excited by the idea and began immediately talking to her sociology professor Connie Frey about shifting her research project to focus on black women. This student was more inspired to pursue her own serious research project after viewing the project of a fellow student researcher. I was pleased to witness seeing this move from researcher to researcher.
