The back-covers and inside descriptions of some black arts texts were fascinating in how they signaled the far-reaching interests of African American writers. In this case, the back-cover of the paperback edition of
Black Fire (1968) announces that the anthology is "a naked indictment of American prejudice and a flaming prophecy of future turmoil." Leading poets of the black arts era were known for their militancy; apparently, even the covers of their books displayed fiery rhetoric as well.
