Black Studies, Comic Books & Future Histories

Student selecting comic book at black studies browsing session at Heroic Adventures Comic Books Store, Edwardsville, IL.

Moving forward, we'll coordinate projects related to comic books and graphic novels in our line-up of black studies programming. The mix of words and imagery may be one way of expanding our engagements with literacy and cultural competency. Plus, illustrated narratives offer possibilities for studying the aesthetics of artistic productions in ways that conventional word-based narratives do not.

For years now, we've done projects related to poetry, novels, and short stories. Perhaps entering the worlds of comic books and graphic novels might stimulate our participants in new, alternative, and exciting ways.
