Late last week, I received issue #1 of the comic book Django Unchained. The comic book is based on Quentin Tarantino's full script of the film and has been adapted by Reginald Hudlin, a producer for the movie. In addition to producing movies, Hudlin has long been involved with the world of comic books. Most notably, he served as the writer for The Black Panther.
Although the comic book adaptation of Django Unchained will likely not receive the film's high level of coverage, the comic book will serve as a useful addition and intervention. Few comic books touch on African American enslavement and struggles for liberation, which makes this work fairly unique in that regard. There are also few, relatively speaking, African American protagonists in comic books.
The Walking Dead, which I follow, went from comic book to television series, so I'll enjoy following a movie to comic book in this instance. Hudlin's adaption breaks Tarantino's narrative up into sections, which will be released over the next several months as episodes. Whereas I watched the movie in one sitting, I'll view the comic book version over an extended period of time. I'll keep you posted.
