Sistas Rocking Naturals at SIUE

Tuesday, February 28, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and then on Wednesday, February 29, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., we'll host a mixed media exhibit entitled "Sistas Rocking Naturals at SIUE." The exhibit will take place in the Underground Reading Room on the third floor of Lovejoy Library.

The exhibit focuses on the politics and implications of African American women choosing to wear their hair free of chemical relaxers. The project provides information about the histories of black women's hair and testimonies from sisters about the benefits and challenges concerning rocking naturals at SIUE.

The political consequences of black women's hair are hard to deny. Just last night, the chatter on twitter and facebook became especially active, among large numbers of African Americans at least,  when Viola Davis stepped on the red carpet for the Academy Awards rocking a natural.

Our exhibit "Sistas Rocking Naturals at SIUE" will include audio recordings of black women at SIUE discussing wearing naturals and display panels about key moments in the histories of how notable women have been received wearing natural hair.
