Charles Berger Week

This week, I decided to do a series of write-ups focusing on my colleague Charles Berger, who retires at the end of this semester after a 50-year career of teaching, scholarship, and service. He had a extensive, 25-year career as a scholar and educator before arriving at SIUE to chair the English department in 2001. Two years later, he hired me.

Charles was uninterested in having one of those going away parties. I understood, but was still a little disappointed. So I decided a few remarks were in order. 

Back in 2015, The Intelligencer ran a good story about Charles. Good. But really, the reporter should’ve talked to some of us in the department, so we could, not to get all caught in semantics here, move from a story about Charles to the elevated realm of the Charles story.
