Beyond the actual poetry, back book covers like this one for Black Magic Poetry, 1961 - 1967 assisted in solidifying the place of key black poets in the minds of readers. Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones) wears a kufi cap signaling a link to conscious communities. The large size of the photograph on the back cover of a volume of poetry was suggestive of the importance of the author.
