Conflict and turbulence were coming to
the surface. The white South clinging
to its old patterns of injustice: two
houses bombed this time, but we keep singing.
We are the concrete manifestation
of the thinking and action of the new
Negro. By walking away from segregation
on buses and in shops, we walk a new
way. We see the answer: face violence
whenever necessary, but refuse
to return it. We walk with temperance
but do not run from the struggle. We choose
to stand for justice without violence.
So we say: justice without violence.
