AR-EN: Involvement of women in popular culture production Pt. 2

[A Notebook on Alyssa Rosenberg & Emily Nussbaum

Earlier, some of us were discussing Alyssa Rosenberg's article “What Impact do Women Have on the Popular Culture They Create.” Some in our group pointed to where Rosenberg wrote that, “There are two reasons to want more women making popular culture (and to make sure they’re paid equally and have access to similar levels of support fro their work): equality of opportunity, and the actual impact that their presence has on content.”

Of those two reasons, which one stands out most to you? Why?

The reason that stands out most to me is the impact that women's presence has on content. I feel that women can have equal opportunity but if their opinion or views are not respected then there will never be an impact to see change.

I believe that the reason that women add more to the content and the impact, is a great reason. I think it carries weight because of all the things that women have been through in history, we offer an interesting perspective on certain issues and therefore can offer new views to existing ideas or concepts.

Women having more impact on content involving popular culture is the reason that stood out to me. When women are able to input their opinions and ideas, it will open the door to more opportunities to be involved in areas where we are underestimated, such as politics. Women look at things differently than men; people think women are too emotional or biased in their opinions, but this trait may be something that is needed in some situations. Everybody has to open their minds to new things.

The reason that stands out most to me is the impact the women add. The whole point to diversity is to have different viewpoints and minds. You shouldn't have diversity just to be able to say you have diversity.

The point that stands out the most to me is the impact that a women's presence has on content. If men are the only acknowledged perspective that we have in popular culture, then we have a biased perspective on the way we view the world, especially because the media is where we base a lot of our ideas about life from. Women are people too, and all humans regardless of race, gender, or cultural beliefs should have the equal right to express their views, and to influence the population.

Out of the two reasons to want more women to make popular culture, I feel the actual impact that their presence has on content stood out the most to me. Being a women, she could relate to some of the struggles the characters have. Also they would probably have a more realistic and positive portrayal for those young girls looking to the media for guidance as they grow up.

The impact their presence has on content stands out most to me. It stands out because while it is important for women to have the same opportunities as men, the actual content is very important to the viewers. For example, a woman may include more realistic female characters or characters real women can aspire to be like, which has a direct impact on both female and male viewers. It allows other women to see themselves in characters and perhaps for men to see women in a different light.

I think it is important to have the presence of women in popular culture to inspire young girls to excel as well. I think strong female role models are important for young girls to see and look up to. I think that there is a lot that female presence can bring to the table.
